PlainShot for Mac
Privacy Policy
PlainShot is a screenshot and annotation app for macOS, provided by Oktay Kırık in Türkiye. This policy covers the app, these PlainShot web pages, and support correspondence.
Screen captures stay on your Mac
PlainShot does not require an account and does not send your screenshots, annotations, window information, or capture history to the developer. It has no advertising, tracking, third-party analytics, or crash-reporting SDK. Capture and editing take place locally.
With your permission, macOS ScreenCaptureKit captures still images of your displays when you start a capture. These full-display images are held in memory while you select and annotate a region and are released when the editor closes. PlainShot also reads on-screen window geometry and application names to help you select a window. It does not continuously record your screen, capture microphone or system audio, or record the text you type in other apps.
Permissions and preferences
Screen Recording permission is required for capture. Manage it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording (called Screen & System Audio Recording on some macOS versions). Revoking access prevents new captures; it does not delete existing history. PlainShot does not request Accessibility or Input Monitoring permission.
Your capture shortcut, pointer setting, menu bar preferences, annotation defaults, and login preference are stored locally in macOS preferences. Open at Login uses macOS login-item registration and can be managed in PlainShot settings or System Settings.
History, saved files, and the clipboard
Each successfully completed capture is stored as a flattened PNG in the app’s sandboxed Application Support/PlainShot/History folder, together with a local history index and cached thumbnails. The index includes information such as capture date, dimensions, filename, and a capture identifier. There is no editable source layer in the saved image. History is retained until you remove it; it is not automatically cleared when a trial ends.
Copy writes the finished PNG to the macOS clipboard. Save also writes an independent copy to the destination you choose through the system save panel. Other apps and macOS features, such as Universal Clipboard, may access or synchronize clipboard contents according to your system settings. Copies saved to a synchronized folder or included in device backups are handled by your chosen services.
Delete individual captures from history or use Settings → History to move all captures to the macOS Trash. Corresponding cached thumbnails are removed when the history item is removed successfully. Empty the Trash to remove those trashed files. Separately saved copies, clipboard contents, backups, and files you have shared must be managed separately. Removing the app alone may leave its local data behind. We have no server copy of your captures to access, recover, or delete.
App Store purchases
Apple handles trial activation, purchases, payment details, and purchase restoration through StoreKit. PlainShot reads verified transaction information, including product identifiers, the original purchase date, and revocation status, to determine trial and permanent-unlock access. This information is checked on your Mac; PlainShot does not send it to a developer-operated server and does not receive your payment card details.
Loading products, purchasing, and restoring purchases may contact Apple and require an internet connection. Apple may separately process App Store, system diagnostic, and payment information under its own settings and policies. See App Store & Privacy.
If you contact support
If you email us, we receive your email address, message, and anything you choose to attach. We use this information to respond, investigate your issue, and meet related legal obligations. Please avoid sending sensitive screenshots or include a redacted example. Support email is handled through our email provider, Apple iCloud, under Apple’s Privacy Policy.
We keep correspondence only as long as needed to handle the request, related disputes, and applicable legal obligations. You may ask us to access, correct, or delete information you provided. Rights available under applicable privacy law, including objections or complaints to a data protection authority, remain unaffected. We cannot identify or remotely manage data stored only on your Mac.
These web pages
The PlainShot web pages have no analytics scripts, advertising, forms, or cookies added by us. GitHub Pages hosts them. GitHub states that it logs visitors’ IP addresses for security when they visit a Pages site; see GitHub Pages data collection and the GitHub Privacy Statement. Opening an external link subjects that visit to the destination’s privacy practices.
Children and personal information
PlainShot does not knowingly collect personal information from children through the app. We do not sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising. If a child has sent personal information in a support message, a parent or guardian may contact us to request deletion, subject to applicable legal obligations.
Changes and contact
We will update this policy and its effective date when our practices change. For privacy questions or requests, email oktay.kirik@icloud.com.
