Start a capture

Click PlainShot in the menu bar and choose New Capture, or use the default shortcut ⌃⌘C (Control–Command–C). Change the shortcut in Settings → General. Click a window or desktop, or drag to select a region. Use the floating toolbar to annotate, ⌘C to finish and copy, or ⌘S to save. Escape first ends an active text or number edit, then deselects an annotation, then discards the session when nothing is selected.

Screen Recording permission

Allow PlainShot in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, which may be called Screen & System Audio Recording on your version of macOS. If macOS asks you to quit and reopen the app, do so, then try another capture. PlainShot captures still images and does not record audio. Accessibility and Input Monitoring access are not required.

Find Settings when the menu bar icon is hidden

Open PlainShot from Applications to show Settings. In Settings → General, turn off Hide Menu Bar Icon to show it again. The capture shortcut continues to work while the icon is hidden. Quit is available at the bottom of General settings.

History, exporting, and deletion

Each completed capture is stored in local history as a PNG. Open history from the menu bar to view, copy, save, or move an item to Trash. Settings → History lets you move all history captures to Trash. Empty the macOS Trash separately when you want to remove those files.

Save creates an independent copy; deleting history does not delete that copy. Trial expiry does not remove or lock your existing history. PlainShot has no cloud backup or remote recovery. If copy or save fails, the editor stays open so you can retry; check disk space and destination permissions.

Trial and Permanent Unlock

In Settings → Access, choose Start Free Trial to activate the 30-day trial, or buy the optional one-time Permanent Unlock. The trial never charges automatically. After the trial ends, new captures require the unlock; existing history remains usable.

Choose Restore Purchases in Settings → Access using the original Apple Account. Check your internet connection and App Store sign-in if products or restored access are unavailable, then use the retry action. Reinstalling does not start a new trial. Apple manages payments and refunds; request a refund through Report a Problem. Do not send us your Apple Account password or payment card details.
